A deaf ballerina with the illusion of dancing like she once did experiences her world
morphing into a fantasy, after discovering the possibility of bringing the music back into her life.
Synopsis
Valentine, a prodigious "Prima Ballerina" suffers an accident that results in her
deafness. Without music in her life, Valentine’s purpose seems to fade away. Her father, the
Ballet Master, Michel, hires a professional instructor, Reneé, specialized in teaching the deaf,
who trains Valentine to feel the vibrations of sound. Yet, despite various attempts, Valentine
remains unable to dance as she once did. As she trains by herself in a studio, she miraculously
hears the faint sound of music attached to a dancing silhouette that resembles herself.
Valentine
follows this shadow in a journey where reality, memories, and fantasy all mesh together in the
hopes of bringing dance back into her life.
Once Valentine hits rock bottom, arriving literally to
“darkness”, a place where she can’t neither see nor hear… finding the music within herself
becomes her only hope, and guided by both the lessons of Reneé and her own love for dancing,
Valentine discovers the “land of dreams” where sound and music become one with her, and the
ballerina is able to dance forever, again.
Director Statement
Cinema can be a mirror to life, but sometimes also, the impression of it. The latter is
precisely what is hoped to achieve with "Salve, Anima". To create a story about the human spirit, and its
connection with the true essence of life.
After all "it is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is
essential is invisible to the eye.”

Interesting Production Facts
Principal production for this project was three days only.
In association with “The Ballet Agency” of Los Angeles, the casting of professional, and
exceptional Ballerinas for the opening and rehearsal scenes was possible.
All the flying shots of Valentine were done with the use of a man dressed in a blue morphsuit, who would carry Marit, the lead, as she danced.
The magical hallway shot with all the greenery despite seeming like a heavily VFX shot,
was actually practically created by the production designer on set, and then based on her
design, the VFX artist gave it the “magic” it needed.
The ballet music in the film, taken from the original composition of “Les Sylphies ballet”
by Frederic Chopin, was originally conducted for the short by film composer Hari Muhic.
Marine de Vachon, who thoroughly choreographed the entire dancing of the film, was
luckily found by the director during the casting process.
All the effects used to represent the loss of hearing of the main character, were practically
done on camera with the use of a variety of lenses known as “lensbaby”.
